For over 20 years, Virotec has been pioneering environmental technologies.
Since 1999, Brian Sheeran and Bruno Bamonte have been pioneering environmental technology innovation and creating the right conditions for commercial success.
At Virotec we believe sustainable practice requires technologies and methodologies that are intelligent, cost effective and for the betterment of the planet.
Virotec’s Environmental technologies provide sustainable, environmentally sensitive solutions to major intractable problems. Each of our technologies are classified as a clean technology or “cleantec” because it not only solves an industrial and/or social problem but also results in a treated material which can be reused, recycled or reprocessed for further environmental benefit.
Virotec’s history is based on a foundation of partnership and collaboration. Virotec was conceived due to its own environmental remediation challenge. Virotec started from humble beginnings with a portfolio of gold, silver and tin mines and faced the common problem within the mining and resource sector; tailings dam capacity and the potential for copper, lead and other heavy metals to spill and leach into the receiving environment.
With a specialized background in engineering and agriculture the innovative thinking and curiosity of Virotec co-founder Brian Sheeran saw an opportunity for sustainability and searched the globe for a solution.
Brian Sheeran partnered with a leading Australian geochemist, the late Professor David McConchie, his associate Dr Malcolm Clark and his extended team at Southern Cross University to pioneer the use of bauxite refinery residues in environmental remediation. Through rigorous scientific research, trials and open innovation a platform, scalable technology was invented. Brian Sheeran joined forces with Bruno Bamonte and pivoted the focus of the business to sustainability and resource production and Virotec was born.
Over the past 20 years the Brian Sheeran and Bruno Bamonte along with the wider Virotec team have developed strategic partnerships, sustainable business practices and ongoing scientific invention to further develop a suite of world class environmental products and has become a world leader in pioneering enabling technologies and environmental remediation expertise.
Virotec’s products and services have successfully gained international recognition and regulatory approval in the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific.

years directly with Rio Tinto Aluminium Bauxite and Alumina Pacific Operations (RTA) to understand and
evaluate the potential capacity of its Bauxsol Technology to treat red mud produced by Rio Tinto’s
Gladstone alumina refineries. This has led to a Stage 1 processing facility located at the Queensland
Alumina Refinery (QAL) in Gladstone. With this facility in place RTA are working with Virotec to increase
the volume of material created and used for beneficial reuse in a variety of remediation and other uses.”

“Virotec’s solution was to treat the water so that the mercury formed in an inert sludge layer at the tank bottom. Concrete was then poured onto this sludge layer to encapsulate it with the water discharged to the environment at well below discharge limits. Holes were then drilled into the tank base so that when it rains, the tank does not fill up.
For 10 years we had wrestled with this problem but Virotec’s unique thinking and technology that works made it happen. And all at a price that we could afford. They are the “go to” guys. ”

“Virotec optimised the performance of our wastewater treatment process including reagents, technical support and liaison with regulatory authorities.
Our wish list was exceeded and our trade waste discharge is well below EPA limits. There are better than expected cost savings for factory process flows. These guys know their stuff. “
